Golfing above the Arctic Circle in 24 hours of daylight
Greetings! Consider this our invitation to you and others to an experience of a lifetime in Ulukhaktok(Holman). Golfers from across the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Southern Canada have come to participate in the Billy Joss Open held the 3rd weekend in July annually. We also invite you to come and golf anytime during June, July and August.
Many years ago, Scottish Hudson’s Bay Manager and avid golfer, Billy Joss, brought the first golf clubs into Holman. Some years later, another Hudson’s Bay Manager, Gary Bristow, made a three-hole golf course then it was expanded to 9 holes by Tony Kulbisky with the help of community members.
This golf course, mostly on tundra and the most Northern 9-hole course in North America complete with artificial greens, has designated tee off markers, boxes complete with ball washers and towels and course layout signs. Below are the yards per hole and the pars. Par for the course is 33.
| Hole # | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yards | 175 | 156 | 272 | 232 | 309 | 200 | 233 | 171 | 244 | 1992 |

It has been the home of the “Billy Joss Open” for many years and has four categories
– Masters, Men’s, Ladies and Juniors which makes this event a family affair. Golfers and spectators are treated to bannock, fried muskox, char and trout, all freshly made on site by volunteers. Tea and coffee are always on the fire ready to refresh golfers tackling the course. There are many other tournaments throughout the summer and club rentals are available by contacting the Hamlet Office at 867-396-8000.
Guests also have the opportunity to go fishing, take a boat trip on the Arctic Ocean, tour the Print and Craft shop, enjoy the scenery and experience the culture and traditions of Ulukhaktok.
